Time Saver Common Bookmarks

Common bookmarks originated as a means of identifying the location of a place in a book that an individual had reached at the last reading. A common bookmark may also be used to identify specific information relevant to individual's interests found in any written document. The idea of the common bookmark was to save time browsing through pages in order to find the place you had reached.

Today the digital revolution has provided a mechanism by which common bookmarks save even more time. Software programmes all contain some form of common bookmarks, some more sophisticated than others but present nonetheless. Enter any word processor software and click on 'Recent Documents' to reveal a list of documents recently used. This form of common bookmarks makes it easy for individuals to quickly locate a piece of work they may be in the process of reading or writing. Alternatively it is possible to place common bookmarks on specific pages for example in a large manuscript and travel directly to them from the first page. In this form the common bookmarks comprise anchor text which are applied using the bookmarks facility found in the word processor tools similar to web page construction software. A link to the bookmarked word is then entered on the first page of the document using the insert drop down menu where 'hyper-link' is selected. A hyper-link is a mechanism that will identify a location within the document that a visitor/reader wants to see and immediately opens the page that the anchor word is located. These forms of bookmarks are made easily identifiable by the using of underling text and changing its colour to something noticeably different to other text.

In addition to the above hyper-links to common bookmarks do not need to always appear in text format, they can in fact be anything found on a page displayed on a computer. Common bookmarks are often seen as photographs. The common bookmarks have been at the centre of a revolution that has developed a simple concept into an industry that daily sees changes in the format that are basically links to common bookmarks. The development of the Internet accelerated the significance of the humble common bookmark by identifying it as a highly usable mechanism to deploy within the digital architecture of web sites and, because websites are able to portray significant individual creativity to millions of users on a global level, their design has itself gained importance at a promotional level. For example it appears reasonable to suggest that each of the hundreds of millions of websites found on the Internet, are themselves common bookmarks and that the hyper-links leading to them are simply a means by which Net users are able to browse, hence the term Browser for the variety of screen windows used by Internet surfers.

Today browsers themselves arrive ready equipped with hyper-links to a variety of essential websites such as news, weather, finance and astrology. From its humble beginnings as a page indicator initially identified by the turning down the corner of a page, the common bookmarks have grown considerably in importance.
